Mascot Henley among adoring friends and fans at Good Intent School, Deptford New Jersey

In 1964, The Beatles phenomenon swept the nation, and tenacious sixteen-year-old JUDY came down with a bad case of Beatlemania. JUDY spent "Eight Days a Week" with a dream to meet her idol - George Harrison. Thanks to a series of strange, but fortunate events, dream becomes reality for the devoted teen.
A must read for anyone who lived through it, or for those who wish they had!

"This is a rollicking roller coaster of a ride as a feisty female set her sights on the Beatles - George in particular - during the Fab Four’s first American trip.

Films such as ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ and ‘Secrets’ tried to capture the moment with fictional fans, but this is the real thing. I found it fascinating!"

Bill Harry, Founder of Mersey Beat

Lions Clubs International is the world's largest secular service organization with over 44,500 clubs and more than 1.4 million members in 203 countries around the world.
Lions Clubs International was founded in the United States in 1917 by Melvin Jones,  a Chicago businessman. Jones asked, with regard to his colleagues, "What if these men who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities?" Jones' personal code, "You can't get very far until you start doing something for somebody else," reminds many Lions of the importance of community service.
At the local, zone, region, district, and international level, Lions members exemplify their motto “We Serve.” Lions Clubs focus on programming related to sight conservation, hearing and speech conservation, diabetes awareness, youth outreach, international relations, environmental issues, and other programs that support the local communities where Lions live. Lions are also passionate about developing effective leadership skills in their members and have an extensive leadership development program including an online Lions Learning Center and several leadership institutes.

And now... he personally designed one for Good Intent Elementary School.

            Why?

To celebrate our shaggy dog hero who also made heroes of the 428 students right there at Good Intent.

Henley Harrison West took his book, "My Name is Henley - my life and times as a rescued dog" and his mission on the road two years ago with a program his mom/owner and typist labeled -- "An Old Dog Teaches Kids New Tricks" tour.

So touched by his visit and story Good Intent Elementary School fell in love with the dog and his mission and Henley became their school mascot.

Driven by Henley's words the children collected thousands of pounds worth of food, blankets, paper towels, leashes, collars, beds, treats, and toys for their local animal rescue shelter - The Gloucester County Animal Shelter

The 4th and final donation drive of the year from the children comes on June 18th along with an exact look-alike "donation box" a HUGE, beautiful cake designed by Food Network Star- Duff Goldman - "Ace of Cakes"  - for the kids to eat and not donate!

This amazing piece of culinary art is being transported from Baltimore (the home base for Duff's Charm City Cakes) and will arrive with much fanfare at Good Intent at 8:30 AM for set-up, in plenty of time to celebrate the children who have learned many valuable life lessons about our animal friends and about themselves while they were at it.

The Pennsylvania SPCA and Best Friends Animal Society, the organization that has been the home of 22 of the pit bulls seized from Michael Vick, are hosting a rally for the 2nd Chance Dogs of Philadelphia - pit bulls that have been rescued from abuse and neglect by the Pennsylvania SPCA's Humane Law Enforcement Officers or found as strays by Animal Control.

  WHAT:

A tail-wagging good time with the 2nd Chance Dogs - shelter dog activities and treats, including veggie dogs and burgers for humans! **Cameras welcome, photographers welcome**

  WHY:

Rescued from situations involving severe neglect, starvation, cruelty, and from illegal dog fighting operations, over 80% of the Pennsylvania SPCA's canine population in Philadelphia is made up of pit bulls and pit bull mixes. The 2nd Chance Dogs of the Pennsylvania SPCA are barking for the opportunity at forever homes. Supporters of the Pennsylvania SPCA, animal lovers and friends will come out to rally and raise awareness of the plight of pit bulls in shelters and encourage adoption.

"If anyone deserves a second chance in the city of Philadelphia, it is the innocent victims of animal abuse," says Sue Cosby, chief executive officer of the Pennsylvania SPCA. "We are here because we recognize that the Philadelphia Eagles are willing to give Michael Vick a second chance. We just hope that Philadelphians will do the same for pit bulls, most of whom don't even get a first chance at being in a loving home."

    WHERE:

Pennsylvania SPCA Parking Lot 350 E. Erie Avenue Philadelphia

  WHEN:
Thursday, August 27, 2009 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm

September 11, 2009
Henley and Mookie welcome back the school children of Good Intent School in Deptford, NJ!
These children, over 400 of them, have embraced Henley and Mookie's stories and have taken on their own personal pledge to be kind to animals for the rest of their lives!
Four donation drives in boxes labeled "For the Friends of Henley" containing thousands of pounds of supplies, food, toys and bedding, were collected by these students last year and donated to their local rescue!  This year they will do the same! :)
Henley and Mookie also selected "Top Picks" for readers... and now the children are enjoying books about animals - improving their reading skills while learning about the love and care needed to give our dear four-legged friends healthy and happy, safe, and loving lives!
Some of those books are: A Dog's Life... Balto... Shelter Dogs... and Dewey the Library Cat!

Another "thumbs up" from Governor Rendell himself -  for this wonderful week for the animals-  he is the owner of three rescued Golden Retrievers!
Henley met the Governor last year and his newest rescued addition, "Maggie."  Henley pawtographed a book for him and Maggie. The Governor read Henley's book - and loved Henley and the message his story conveyed.
We MUST be the voice for the dear animals who cannot speak for themselves!
The only way evil and apathy can triumph is for good people to do nothing!
