A teacher of the teachers!
The EIRC (Educational Information & Resource
Center) in Sewell,
New Jersey, has hired Ms.Kristen to give teaching workshops and
seminars to new teachers as well as seasoned veterans and their principals. Dr.
Jay Dugan attended a curriculum consortium and heard Ms. Kristen
speak about her work with students, her books that are filled with
positive messages for teens, her passion
for reading and writing,
and he knew immediately that the state of New Jersey was in need of her talents.

was welcomed to her 4th Teen Summit (Given
by Communities in Schools) at The Philadelphia
Convention Center on May 10th, 2006. Dr. Louis Castelli, President
of Ark Media and long time friend of Ms. Kristen showed an
amazing video of Judith and her students at Frankford High
School as they created their groundbreaking book, "What
We Want To Tell You." Judith spoke to the students
at the Convention about following their dreams and making their
mark in the world a positive one. As she said, "If

NBC sent a film crew to Frankford High School to tape Ms.
Kristen
in one of her
writing workshops.
It was one of the most successful
workshops of its type ever shown on television! Schools,
libraries,
Book Conventions and Librarian Conferences from as
far away as California called to ask her to visit and
speak and work her magic for their children!

Judith's
first Young Adult book, "The
Purple Hat Gang" was
only out for 11 months but it created such a stir within
the The Philadelphia Public School System, that she was
asked to be the Banquet Speaker at The Annual
Pennsylvania School Librarians Conference, in Hershey, Pa.
Judith's speech was packed with passion, intelligence,
and humor, and she received a standing ovation immediately
after addressing over 1,000 public school librarians. Several
stormed the stage and asked the author for her email address
and phone number with hope that Judith could come and visit
their school... their children. It was quite a moving experience
for one and all, and it was a tremendous success. She will
speak again next year about her "Books
are Power" program.
At this Philadelphia Librarians Conference Judith Kristen
received The Philadelphia Librarians 2006 Award as their "Honoree
of the Year" in appreciation for her
support of school libraries and dedication to the children
of Philadelphia!

BOOKS
OF NOTE:
-- The
Purple Hat Gang, Olivia Twist... a quest for the glass half full,
as well as What
We Want to Tell You, have all reached "Book
of Note" status. Chosen from among 2,500 other books,
from every publisher imaginable, a tri-state book committee selects only
150 books
a year to hold the title, "Book of Note." Among those 150 are
the top fifty books, which are discussed at The
Annual Librarians Conference. Three years in a row, Judith's books,
including the one she worked on with the students at Frankford High School,
were
among these select fifty.

2007
Update:
On
January 5th, 2007, The Teen Writers Guild of
Frankford High took their
talent to
another level. They are in process of writing a newsette
for the school. The new publication will be called "The Teen Writers
Guild of Frankford High School Presents, "THE
PIONEER NEWSETTE".
The paper will be just four pages long but it will contain pertinent
school information, book reviews, movie reviews, community updates, a "This
Time in Frankford High History" column so that new students can
see what was happening at their school 30, 40, 50 even 80 and 90 years
earlier! There will be a sportsline column, a "Whatever" column
-- containing thoughts from the Guild students, launched by Isbelia Paniagua,
a "Reality Check" column, Entertainment section and a short
story or poem by one of the Guild members, and a "Question for the
Staff" where the Principal, or teacher, or office staff, security,
will be asked a question by a Guild reporter and then the answer will
be printed for all to see. -- "IF you could change one thing about
this school... what would it be?" ... "What can we do to save
our library from being eliminated?" ... "What can we all do
to bring Frankford High School back to its former glory?" --- (and
more to com e!) * * * * *
On January 12, 2007, NBC10 news came to Frankford
High School to film
The Guild students to talk about the positive force now in their lives
since they have reached out into the wonderful world of reading and
writing as a way to self-expression. Many of The Guild students had
major issues: suicide attempts, "cutting", eating disorders,
truancy, gang involvement, but now...things have changed for the better.
These students, many who used to "Fight for their lives" in
their own way, now "Write for their lives" in a positive
fashion. Some students have moved up from regular classes to advanced
placement classes, their old habits have died hard, and many will be
attending college, one is now a regular columnist for the new "MOTIVOS" Magazine -- and some even tutor others to aid them in their own road to moving
forward to a better life -- for the rest of their lives! As one of
Judith's students told her,
"The best kind of bling is when you
learn to sparkle on your own." ... And it is.

Judith
has formed The
Teen Writers Guild at her old
Alma Mater, Frankford
High School.
The Guild's book, "What
We Want to Tell You" was released in
February to rave reviews! It's a compilation
of each member's work. All of the proceeds
will benefit the Frankford High School library.
These students also accompanied Judith and
Magna Diaz, Frankford's school librarian, to
Hershey, Pa., in May, for the annual conference
of Pennsylvania School Librarians. This was
a wonderful opportunity to show how her highly
successful program is reaching and teaching
the students of Philadelphia and beyond.

Judith
Kristen has been asked to write a book honoring
her former high school's 100th anniversary. The
book will be titled, "100
years of Pioneers -- Frankford High School's Centennial
Celebration" (frankfordhs.phila.k12.pa.us)This
is a three year project that will involve much
detailed work,
emailing, interviewing, and archive searching,
but one that Judy is so honored to be a part of.

 The
Guild Writers have just completed a Podcast! A PODCAST
of Judith Kristen, Mrs. Diaz, Frankford High's school librarian, and
all of The Teen Writers Guild members was recorded in late May of 2006.
It will be ready to go after a few more edits, and available in September,
2006! For those of you who are not familiar with this term, a
Podcast is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio programs
or
music videos, over the Internet for playback on mobile devices and personal
computers. (IPODS) Podcasting's essence is about creating content (audio
or video) for an audience that wants to listen or watch when they want,
where they want, and how they want. Welcome to the new millenium! By
the way... The podcast is entitled... "Once Upon a Time
in a Library!"

 Judith received
a call from "O" Magazine requesting information
about the students and their book! Pat Towers, one of the executive employees
at "O" Magazine called Ms. Kristen to ask for
more information about The Teen Writers Guild of Frankford High School.

The
Teen Writers Guild of Frankford High School so enjoyed their time
with Ms. Kristen creating "What We Want To
Tell You" that
they have asked her to write another book with them at the beginning of
the 2006-07 school year! Of course, she said YES! The
book is tentatively titled:"Urban Reality". These students are so eager to work with her, and so enjoy the creative
process from one end to the other, they are already sending her pieces
of their work!!! How many teachers have their
students sending in homework for next year while still in June of the
old school year??!! ...Answer:
- "0"

Dr.
Louis Castelli, President of Ark Media and long time friend
of Ms. Kristen put together an amazing video of Judith and her students
at Frankford High School as they created their groundbreaking book, "What
We Want To Tell You." Dr. Castelli also worked with the kids
at Frankford by showing them the proper way to set up, stylize, and design
their own book cover. It was a terrific class and the students adored him!

 And,
on June 13th, 2006 The Teen Writers Guild of Frankford High School was
introduced on the floor of The Pennsylvania Senate for their outstanding
achievements that were truly against ALL odds.
Senator
Christine Tartaglione and her staff
welcomed The Guild students with open arms. All 16 members, plus Frankford's
Librarian, Magna Diaz,
Ms.Kristen, and her husband, Andrew West, left 30th Street Station in Philadelphia
and traveled to Harrisburg for their special day. All
thanks to Senator Tartaglione! The students met with the Senator,
and she applauded them for their hard work. For a school that was labeled
by CNN as one of
the
most persistently dangerous schools in America, these kids showed what
they could do when given the chance, the right tools and the proper motivation.
Mrs. Diaz, the children and Ms. Kristen all received a beautiful Senatorial
acknowledgement for their fine work! Ms. Kristen proudly displays hers
in her office. The Senator spoke to her fellow members and expressed
how this writing program that so moved these children toward excellence,
should
be a statewide program, if not a nation-wide one! At
that moment, The Guild, seated in the balcony, was applauded by all members
of the Senate! What
a thrill that was! The kids ended their day with a wonderful lunch, a book
signing, and the royal tour of the beautiful Pennsylvania State Capitol
Building. Their next book, "Urban Reality" due
out around the holidays, (2006) is eagerly anticipated.

 Frankford
High School Principal, Richard Mantell traveled
to Beijing,
China on July 30th, 2006 to discuss student issues
and curriculum with Chinese School Principals and he brought along
several copies of "What
We Want To Tell You" as gifts. Frankford has gone international!!!

The
positive feedback has reached far and wide and even
Hollywood has
made its call to Judy. Marcy
G. Kaplan, an associate producer
from the emmy-award winning FOX TV show "HOUSE" loved
the "Purple
Hat Gang" and requested
the screenplay from Judith … who
happily mailed it to Hollywood.
 Philadelphia's
own Ray Murray, President of Banyan Productions, is
aware of the good noise her books are making among her target audience,
and he's reading The Purple Hat Gang to see what Banyan's
new "Banyan Entertainment", the producer of "Trading
Spaces" can do for it!

Lloyd
Remick, Esq. President of Zane Management of Philadelphia

ready!" Mr. Remick is a nationally
